Being snowed in can definitely make it harder to stay on track with healthy eating, especially when you’re bored and the fridge seems like the most exciting option. But there are ways to make it work! Here are some tips to help you eat healthy while stuck at home:
1. Prep Easy Snacks
Veggies & Hummus: Cut up some carrots, celery, or cucumber and dip them in hummus for a satisfying, healthy snack.
Fruit: Apples, oranges, or
whatever fruit you have on hand can be great for snacking. Pair with a small handful of nuts or yogurt for a balanced snack.
2. Make a Healthy Soup
Soups are perfect for snowed-in days. You can make a big pot of something like a veggie soup, lentil soup, or chicken soup with whatever you’ve got in your pantry. You’ll have plenty of leftovers, too!
3. Get Creative with Frozen Veggies
If fresh veggies are low, use frozen. They’re just as nutritious, and you can throw them into almost any dish, like a stir-fry or pasta. Frozen spinach, peas, or mixed veggies work great.
4. Healthy Comfort Food
Sweet potato fries or roasted potatoes are a great alternative to regular fries. Slice them up, toss with olive oil, and roast in the oven.
Make a healthy mac & cheese using whole grain pasta, a bit of cheddar, and add cauliflower or butternut squash to the cheese sauce for some extra nutrition.
5. Focus on Balanced Meals
Aim for meals that include a balance of protein, fiber, and healthy fats. This will keep you full longer and help prevent mindless snacking. For example, try a turkey sandwich on whole-grain bread with some avocado and veggies, or a quinoa bowl with beans, veggies, and olive oil dressing.
6. Drink Water or Herbal Tea
Being stuck inside can make it easy to forget about hydration. If you're tempted to snack out of boredom, drinking a glass of water or making a warm cup of herbal tea can help curb cravings.
7. Limit Junk Food Access
If you can, try to keep unhealthy snacks out of sight. If you don’t have the “easy” options in front of you, you’ll be less likely to reach for them.
8. Move Around
Even though you're snowed in, try to stay active with indoor exercises like yoga, stretching, or even a quick dance party. Moving around will not only help fight boredom, but it’ll keep your metabolism active and prevent the mindless snacking.
9. Try Cooking New Recipes
If you're bored, why not get creative with what you have? Search for healthy recipes that use pantry staples (like canned beans, rice, or oats). It’ll pass the time and help you experiment with healthy flavors.
